Day 11
The mind is not unlike a muscle that has atrophied from lack of proper use. It must be exercised daily to retain its focus and usefulness as a tool for the higher self.
The garden is a perfect metaphor for the mind. There are a myriad of events taking place, often sight unseen. In fact, a productive garden is a hive of activity, but on the surface it is supremely calm.
Continue to focus your attention on your favourite garden. Perhaps you have chosen your own garden, or a city park. Make sure that it is large enough to occupy your mind, but not so elaborate or unfamiliar that the mind may become lost.
Focus on keeping the mind within the confines of the garden. Concentrate only on the trees, plants, paths and other features contained within its boundaries.
The untrained mind will behave like a wild animal. Every so often it will escape the garden, and indulge in random thoughts. Be on guard. Gently, but firmly, bring the mind back into the garden. Observe it as it moves about, searching for something to attract its attention. Smile to yourself as you begin to preempt the mind’s attempt to run amuck. Congratulate yourself on a job well done.
